Specific Research Interests: Our research focuses on the conservation biology of species that are caught in commercial and recreational fisheries. We study the ecology of fishes and effects of fishing in order to provide information for better resource management strategies. For example, we are currently studying habitat associations and movements of fishes to estimate the effects of marine reserves. Current Projects: (1) Research on rockfish, lingcod, and groupers to help promote the wise use, conservation, and management of valuable fishery resources; (2) Collaborative fisheries research; (3) Submersible surveys to evaluate changes in fish populations in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary; (4) Movement studies of nearshore fishes using acoustic telemetry; (5) Promotion and coordination of regional marine research and education; (6) Development of an ocean science camp for children.
