Biography: 

Dr. Welschmeyer has been a full time teaching/research faculty member at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories since 1989.  He received his Bachelors degree from the University of California, Berkeley (1974) and his Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the University of Washington, Seattle WA (1982).  He served as Assistant/Associate Professor at Harvard University (1982-1988 Oceanography) and as Senior Scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI, 1989-1991).  He now serves as Lead Scientist for the Golden Bear Research Center (GBRC), a joint collaboration between the California Maritime Academy and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories; both are California State University campuses.  GBRC is now engaged in research, development and testing in the area of ballast water management.  Dr. Welschmeyer served as Advisor to the EPA Science Advisory Board on Ballast Water Management; he is a continuing member of the ballast water Technology Advisory Group (TAG) for the California State Lands Commission and a continuing member of the EPA/ETV Technical Panel for ballast water.

Research Interests:

Current research projects include improved rapid viability assays for the assessment of ballast water management and abatement of aquatic invasive species.  Dr. Welschmeyer’s lab utilizes techniques/instrumentation fundamental to the understanding of growth and physiology of marine plankton such as radioisotope tracers, metabolic assays, culture incubations, microscopy and flow cytometry.
