Biography:

As a contract scientist to the NOAA/NMFS Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Program from 1986 to 2010, I headed the "Krill and Zooplankton" component of this multidisciplinary program and was actively involved in the annual January-March field season net sampling activities. Collaboration with colleagues involved with the physical oceanography and primary productivity components was directed towards understanding ecosystem variability on seasonal, annual and longer time scales. During this time I advised graduate students with ichthyoplankton research projects and, with colleagues, published numerous papers concerning ecosystem dynamics driven by coupled atmospheric-oceanic processes.  As an emeritus scientist I am currently collaborating with Karen Wishner (University of Rhode Island) studying Eastern Tropical Pacific ichthyoplankton assemblages and with Jarrod Santora (NOAA/NMFS, Santa Cruz) examining California Current zooplankton population dynamics in relation to decadal-scale atmospheric-oceanic processes.

Research Interests:
  • Ichthyoplankton, zooplankton
  • Marine fisheries
