My graduate studies have given me the opportunity to study algal population dynamics within Nereocystis luetkeana (Bull Kelp) forests. This research was spurred with an interest in a particular "obligate" epiphyte of Nereocystis called Pyropia nereocystis. I will be actively SCUBA diving in multiple N. luetkeana forests in order to characterize the small scale spatial and temporal distribution of the epiphyte. I'm currently in the midst of culturing P. nereocystis and N. luetkeana in order to conduct in situ settlement experiments using the two species.
