John H. Martin Scholarship

one scholarship of $3000 for MLML graduate students

Xiphias Martin Scholarship 

– one scholarship of $500 for MLML graduate students

Established in honor of founding faculty member and MLML Director for nearly 18 years Dr. John Martin, along with his longtime canine companion Xiphias, these scholarships award  creativity in marine science and dedication to community service—qualities that John valued and embodied. James Nybakken Scholarship

one scholarship of $2500 for MLML graduate students

Established by founding faculty member and MLML’s invertebrate zoology professor for thirty-two years Dr. James Nybakken, this scholarship awards invertebrate zoology students who demonstrate the potential to become outstanding scientists by conducting innovative research. Signe Lundstrum Memorial Scholarship

two scholarships of $1000 each for MLML thesis research

The MLML Quilt Guild funds this scholarship in memory of Signe Amanda Lundstrum, who served as a MLML lab technician from 1972 to 1989, to award students using a creative approach to thesis research. For more information, please see the common application packet.  

Bill Watson Memorial Scholarship

– one scholarship of $TBD (we are still collecting donations) for MLML graduate students

Bill Watson was a big part of MLML for many years—first as a student in Dr. Broenkow’s Phys Oce lab, then working in the shop and helping many students with projects, starting a bluegrass group at the lab, and finally starting a two-year trip to handcraft 5 string banjos, one of which was raffled off to fund a student scholarship a few years ago. Sonia Linnik Hamilton Marine Science Scholarship

one scholarship of $1,000 for an undergraduate or graduate student

After graduating from MLML in 1984, Sonia Linnik Hamilton worked for the Department of Fish and Wildlife, initially as a fishery biologist and later as an environmental specialist in the Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response in Vallejo, CA. On January 11, 1992, she died in a helicopter accident in the Carquinez Strait while investigating an oil spill. Sonia left behind a bequest to fund this scholarship, which awards undergraduate or graduate students at MLML who show outstanding academic merit. For more information, please see the common application packet.

Simpkins Family Marine Science Scholarships

Lifelong supporters and donors to SJSU, the Simpkins Family recently established the Simpkins Family Marine Science Scholarships to support Moss Landing Marine Labs students’ research, education, and marine environment stewardship. For more information, please see the common application packet.

Loury Family Marine Science Outreach Scholarship

one scholarship of $1,000 for graduate students

This scholarship is funded by the foundation established by the parents of MLML alumna Erin Loury, who helped start the MLML student blog and enjoyed MLML’s other outreach activities before graduating in 2011. The David and Dana Loury Foundation established this scholarship to recognize MLML students who are committed to marine science communication and outreach while working toward their degrees. For more information, please see the common application packet.

MLML Scholar Awards

Established by the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Student Body, these scholarships provide financial support to MLML graduate students who show academic dedication and outstanding research. For more information, please see the common application packet.

three scholarships of $850 each for grad students with approved thesis proposals
